Sometimes things just come to a boil. Take yesterday for example.
I celebrated the day by watching 2 movies. Hamilton, and 1776. Now, I won’t take up time by gushing about Hamilton, but it was 1776 that got me going. Maybe it was the idiots setting off fireworks among trees on the streets around us, but maybe it was also all the headlines from the last months and years. It’s been Not Fun to watch the country crumble. Really. There are days I just need to scream. And I do.
Now, we know who wrote the Declaration of Independence. It was of its time and place. We need a new Declaration, for these times. So, with some apologies to the original, here’s what I propose.
The Declaration of the People of these united States of America, When it becomes necessary for the People to dissolve the government as it stands, and to call for Elections such that the People have the right to say who should lead them, Opinion requires that they should declare the causes which impel them.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that All Humans are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience shows that we are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.–Such has been the patient sufferance of all the People; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter the Government. The history of the present president is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
He has taken from us Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has utterly neglected to attend to the Pandemic raging among us.
He has refused to accommodate large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of voting, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has endeavoured to obstruct the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing to testify in Congress, or to hand over documents which would either prove or damn his innocence.
He has made Judges from the lists of his own party, who will be for the remainder of their lives adherent to only his and his party’s wishes.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For assenting to large bodies of armed Police among us.
For protecting these Police from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States
For cutting off or obstructing our Trade with all parts of the World.
For imposing Taxes where such payments create undue burdens on the People.
He has twisted the meaning of Government here, by declaring and waging his own War against those of us with skin colored differently than his own.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us by speaking at Rallies, and revelled in the attention and adoration instead of listening to the People.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A president whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
We, therefore, the People of these united States of America, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do solemnly publish and Declare that the president should step down, and his party as well, and allow for new free Elections that will prove the People’s will. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.
